INCOLSA was awarded the 2007 WebFeat President's Award for Innovation for its INSPIRE Services. Margaret Mohundro, INCOLSA's Director of INSPIRE, received the award at the January, 2007 ALA Mid-Winter Meeting in Seattle.

INCOLSA uses WebFeat to implement web-based federated searching of the INSPIRE databases. The PALNI OPAC is included among the more than 40 online databases that can be searched in parallel through the INSPIRESearch web interface.

INCOLSA is the recipient of the 2007 WebFeat President's Award for Innovation for its INSPIRE service. The award recognizes innovation in design and function in state-of-the-art information systems.

The WebFeat President's Award for Innovation is presented to libraries with the most innovative federated search systems in each of three categories -- academic libraries, public libraries, and multitype library networks. The winners were chosen from more than 30 nominees for bold innovation in the design of their federated search interfaces and for functionality. INCOLSA was noted for its quality of federated searching integration with the existing INSPIRE Web pages and for its management of INSPIRE's challenging user authentication service. Other winners include Dartmouth College and Cuyahoga County Public Library (Cleveland, OH). Federated search systems allow users to view materials from many online sources using a single search engine. INCOLSA began implementation of INSPIRE federated searching in 2005, and launched the new service in April, 2006.

INCOLSA is the Indiana library network providing leadership in statewide cooperative library activities including resource sharing, training, OCLC services, and the INSPIRE virtual library. INSPIRE puts a research library on the desktop of every Hoosier, with 30 online databases offering 10,000 magazines, encyclopedias, almanacs, and other resources to meet the information needs of all residents of Indiana. Since its inception in 1998, Indiana citizens have searched INSPIRE more than 80 million times. INSPIRE is funded in part by the Indiana General Assembly and by federal LSTA grants.

INCOLSA Board Meeting Foiled Again By Internet Trouble

Submitted by vince on Fri, 04/28/2006 - 6:00pm.

For the second year in a row, attendees at INCOLSA's annual Board Meeting were treated first-hand to a demonstration of just how unpredictable networking technology can be. As in past years, INCOLSA gave Board members an option to attend the April 26, 2006 Board Meeting from any of four remote locations via video-conferencing technology. The technology offers remote attendees significant savings in travel time and costs, but of course only when it works.

As in the past, this year's Board Meeting was held at the Marten House Lilly Conference Center in Indianapolis, with four remote, satellite locations throughout the State. The plan was to provide two-way, real-time, Internet-based voice and video between each of the remote sites and Indianapolis. Unfortunately, once again, the Marten House's Internet connection was too unreliable to support working connections to the remote sites. As a result, INCOLSA had to resort to backup cell phone communication to get voting results from the remote sites, remote attendees were unable to see or hear speakers in Indianapolis, and Indianapolis attendees had to endure long delays as staff tried to work around the communications issues.

I'm blogging.

I'm going to be making a concerted effort to write more blog entries on the site. I'm hoping this will help me stay in better touch with interested PALNI members, which is a focus of my job. In this blog, I'll try to talk about some things which are Aleph-related and general interest, and perhaps some random thoughts on librarianship - stuff that doesn't always belong on the listservs.

To make the blog easier to find, I've set up a direct link on the left-hand side for now. This may get moved later. Also, I'm going to be making my blog entries open-access, so they should show up in the RSS feeds for the blog if you wish to subscribe that way.

OCLC's Top 1000 Titles

Here's the OCLC list of the top 1000 cataloged titles. As OCLC puts it, these represent "the intellectual works that have been judged to be worth owning by the 'purchase vote' of libraries around the globe." Pretty interesting . . . but does #15 seem just a little out of place?

Daylight Savings Time and Your Computers

Submitted by palniadmin on Tue, 03/21/2006 - 4:42pm.

As we all know, all of Indiana is set to begin honoring Daylight Savings Time this year, on April 2. This may affect your PCs and computers. In most cases, your computer centers have probably already addressed the issue on your campuses.

However, just in case, here are some helpful tips from Butler University, courtesy of Lewis Miller, on how to be ready for the daylight savings time changeover. It includes a links to some web pages at Butler that describe in detail what both Windows and Mac users may need to do to get ready.

Daylight Saving Time and Your Computer

Background

Passed by the Indiana State Legislature last April, the State of Indiana has decided to start observing Daylight Saving Time along with 47 other states in the US starting this spring. Indianapolis and Marion County [and most of Indiana] will stay in the Eastern Standard Time Zone and will change to Daylight Saving Time in the Spring.

Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 a.m. the first Sunday in April, when clocks are advanced one hour, and ends at 2 a.m. the last Sunday in October, when clocks are turned back one hour.

PDAs

If you have a personal PDA (Treo, Palm, Blackberry, etc) that you sync with your calendar, special steps will be needed on March 22 BEFORE you sync the PDA with your Butler calendar. Please watch for further instructions.
