Butler Digital Collection Joins IHC smartDESKTOP Project

BUTLER DIGITAL COLLECTION JOINS IHC smartDESKTOP PROJECT

The Butler University Jeanette Siron Pelton Botanicals Print Collection has become the first PALNI digital imaging collection to join the Indiana Humanities Council smartDESKTOP project. The entire collection of 71 botanical-related images is now available within smartDESKTOP to be utilized by participating teachers and schools in Indiana.

Butler's collection was one of the first complete collections on the PALNI CONTENTdm server and also one of the first OAI enabled collections. The IHC is able to share information from Butler's collection via the OAI protocol and integrate the images into their learning platform.

Participants in the IHC smartDESKTOP project include the National Endowment for the Humanties, the Smithsonian Institution, the Eiteljorg Museum, IUPUI, and many others.

PALNI Digital Collections Exceed 30,000 Items

PALNI Digital Collections (http://replica.palni.edu) recently surpassed the 30,000 digital items mark. Since beginning in late 2004, member schools have been adding items at a feverish pace. Some of the highlights of the PALNI Digital Collections includes:

- numerous items from the Plowshares Peace Studies collaboration between Goshen College, Earlham College, and Manchester College.

- architectural images from Concordia Theological Seminary highlighting the designs of Eero Saarinen.

- collections of historical documents relating to individual colleges and universities such as Hanover College, Wabash College, Butler University, Anderson University, Taylor University and Marian College.

- a collection of civil war artifacts contributed by Wabash College in conjunction with their local historical society

- a special archive of botanical-related images from the Butler University archives.

OCLC acquires DiMeMa, developer of software for digital media management
CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software key component of OCLC digital solution set

DUBLIN, Ohio, August 16, 2006 — OCLC Online Computer Library Center has acquired DiMeMa (Digital Media Management), the organization that developed and supports CONTENTdm, the leading digital management software for libraries distributed by OCLC.

CONTENTdm software offers a complete set of tools to store, manage and deliver digital collections such as historical documents, photos, newspapers, audio and video on the Web. OCLC has been the exclusive distributor of CONTENTdm software to libraries, cultural heritage organizations and other nonprofit organizations since 2002.

"CONTENTdm makes it possible for libraries to easily manage their own, unique digital collections. New ContentDM 4.1 Acquisition Station Now Available

The updated acquisitions station for ContentDM version 4.1 is now available. You can download from the ContentDM site, or here at the PALNI website. The direct link for downloading from the PALNI website is:

(Note: the installation key has changed for the new acq. station.)

There is also a patch available for a couple of issues with the 4.1 acquisitions station. This should also be installed at the time of upgrading. The installation directions are located with the patch. The direct link to the patch is located here:

PALNI Digital Collections upgraded to ContentDM version 4.1

This morning (June 26) PALNI's ContentDM installation was upgraded from version 4.0 to version 4.1. This point release is not a major upgrade, but rather adds functionality to the system. Attached to this news article is a PDF of the enhancements implemented by the 4.1 upgrade.

There is a new acquisition station for 4.1, which will be uploaded shortly. It is not required that you install this right away. The version 4.0 acquisition station will work with version 4.1, and vice-versa. However, I would recommend that you consider installing the new acquisition station at your earliest convenience in order to stay current. You will also need to upgrade the acquisition station if you wish to utilize any of the enhancements provided by version 4.1.

There was no downtime as a result of this upgrade, so it should be a seamless transition. However, if you notice any odd behavior on the website, please submit a helpdesk ticket as soon as possible so that it can be reviewed. Thank you.

PALNI Hosts Digital Library Metadata Presentation

On Tuesday, May 9, PALNI hosted Jenn Riley from Indiana University as she presented "Applying Digital Library Metadata Standards". Ms. Riley is the Metadata Librarian from the Digital Library Program at IU and has given many useful presentations on metadata standards around the state. Her presentation was given at the INCOLSA offices in Indianapolis, and simulcast to two locations in Nappanee and Charlestown.

Ms. Riley skillfully explained how traditional catloging techniques can be transferred to new digital metadata standards, the importance of choosing the proper metadata scheme, and the importance of composing metadata for general consumption. By all accounts the presentation was a great success!

On May 9 from 1-4pm, Jenn Riley from the Indiana University Digital Library Program will be at INCOLSA to present a session entitled "Applying the Digital Library Metadata Standards". This is a reschedule of the session originally scheduled for March 21 that was canceled due to the weather. This session will specifically address the metadata standards set forth by the Indiana Digital Library Summit. The metadata standards will be explained, along with practical examples of how to apply the metadata to your digital objects.

There will be three possible locations for participation:

INCOLSA (6202 Morenci Trail, Indianapolis - live location)
Nappanee Public Library (157 N. Main St., Nappanee - video receive location)
Wilson Education Center (11440 Highway 62, Charlestown - video receive location)

PALNI Libraries share a CONTENTdm Digital Library server located in the PALNI computer room in Indianapolis. Fifteen digital library collections, with more than 35,000 digitized images and objects, may be browsed and searched through a shared web interface. Also, a major digital archive of digitized peace studies material, can be searched through a customized user interface, developed by Earlham College, Goshen College, and Manchester College, for their joint Plowshares Project.

PALNI CONTENTdm Training Opportunity

On Tuesday, July 26, INCOLSA will host a 'lab day' for schools who would like training on the current version of CONTENTdm. The new version of CONTENTdm is out, but we will probably not upgrade our server until around September. Therefore, this training will help those schools who need to get going on the current version of CONTENTdm available on our server.

This will be a half-day session, hands-on, and will focus on the usage of the acquisition station and the managing of collections. The cost of this session will be FREE to PALNI schools, but attendance is limited to 12 people. You can view a full description and register at the following link:
